An innovative cable-free solution for extending networks through concrete flooring has been developed.
The traditional way of extending an enterprise network through concrete flooring and walls is to drill through the concrete or reroute cables which is expensive and takes time. However, this new method may have a big impact on the industry moving forward.
Conduits for network cables are usually placed before concrete flooring is poured and are designed to service the current network requirements of an organisation. If the building is modified or extended, more cables to connect new spaces to the company network may be required.
Though Wi-Fi can be used in some buildings to extend a network, concrete flooring and walls are typically around twenty metres thick, which blocks wi-fi signals. The normal solution to extend a network through thick concrete is to drill holes for new cables. This process involves obtaining permits, inspections or X-ray examinations which is expensive and takes a long time. Research in the USA found that the average cost a company pays for a network extension is $3,000.
Technology company Airvine has developed an innovative solution for this issue. Their WaveCore system consists of radio units that are attached to either side of a concrete wall or floor that blast radio signals through solid concrete which is quickly installed without the need for cables. A spokesperson for AirVine said:
“Little to zero construction is required, which means very little disruption to businesses and very short installation times – which is not the case when structured cabling or drilling has to take place.”
The company is aiming to provide an update on the rollout of its new solution in the near future.
