Concrete planks to be used in Exmouth primary school extension

Pre-cast concrete planks are being used in a primary school extension to create a concrete flooring solution that delivers build and cost efficiencies.

The £1.2 million extension at Withycombe Raleigh Church of England Primary School in Exmouth forms a part of the £8 million Devon County Council primary school improvements project.

The Withycombe Raleigh project involves the construction of a two-storey, standalone 10,200 square feet teaching block on the existing school grounds, which will contain group rooms, break-out spaces, toilets and circulation areas.

The teaching block will be of steel frame construction with masonry and timber cladding and a standing seam metal roof. Pre-cast concrete planks will be used at first floor level to deliver build and cost efficiencies. To maximise internal space, the new structure will feature under floor heating.

The first projects to be procured via the Construction Framework South West, the school extension project will be developed in line with the Education Funding Agency’s (EFA) baseline design standards, which aim to cut construction costs, through the use of specialist concrete flooring solutions, for example, whilst delivering high quality teaching environments.

Specialist concrete flooring contractors are best placed to take on this project; supplying professional services to large commercial contractors and engineers, using a combination of expertise and the latest technical solutions and innovations to deliver concrete floors that suit the requirements of the project and continue to last.
